Japanese Auction Grades — What They Mean

Japanese cars are sold at auction with graded condition reports. This is the most important factor when importing. Never buy below grade 3 for Pakistan.

GradeMeaningRecommendation
S / SAShowroom condition — essentially new or rarely used✅ Best buy if budget allows
AAExcellent condition, no faults, no accidents✅ Highly recommended
AVery good condition, very minor scratches only✅ Recommended for most buyers
4 / 4.5Good condition, minor dents or scratches✅ Good value choice
3 / 3.5Average condition, visible dents or scratches⚠️ Acceptable for budget buyers — inspect repair work
2 / 2.5Below average — multiple issues or panel damage⚠️ Risky — only for very experienced buyers
R / RARepaired — the car has been in an accident and repaired❌ Avoid for Pakistan — hidden structural damage risk
BParts missing or major issues — often for parts cars❌ Do not import

Step-by-Step Import Process

01

Find a Reliable Exporter

Work with a Pakistani-based or Japan-based exporter who specialises in Pakistan exports. Get references and verify their track record. Major platforms: JapaneseCarTrade, BE FORWARD, Cars From Japan.

02

Choose Your Car & Auction Grade

Always request a minimum AA or A grade auction sheet. S and SA are better but pricier. Never accept grade R or RA unless you specifically want a repaired vehicle and know what you're doing.

03

Verify the Auction Sheet

After the car is bid and won, get the original auction sheet in PDF. Cross-reference damage codes with our guide. Verify the sheet through an independent service — do not just trust the exporter's word.

04

Arrange Shipping (RoRo or Container)

RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) is cheaper (Rs. 80,000–150,000) but car is exposed to salt air. Container shipping (Rs. 150,000–300,000) is safer for newer cars. Transit time: 4–6 weeks to Karachi.

05

Hire a Clearing Agent

Hire a licensed customs clearing agent at Karachi. They will handle GD filing, duty payment, customs examination, and port delivery. Cost: Rs. 15,000–40,000. Choose agents with Karachi or Port Qasim experience.

06

Pay Customs Duty

Duty is calculated on assessed value using customs software. Typical range: 50–100% of the vehicle's assessed customs value for non-commercial imports. Use our duty calculator for estimates.

07

Get the Car Registered

After clearing customs, get the vehicle registered with your provincial Excise & Taxation department. You will need: GD, CNIC, customs paid receipt, and photos of the car.
